Fire Protection Mechanic: A Rewarding and Highly In-Demand Career in Quebec
In Quebec, the labour shortage is hitting many construction sectors hard, including the trade of fire protection mechanic. This role is essential to building safety and helps save lives through the installation of reliable sprinkler systems.
A career in fire protection is technical, hands-on, rewarding, well paid, and in high demand across the province.
A Trade at the Heart of Building Safety
A fire protection mechanic primarily works on the installation, repair, and maintenance of automatic sprinkler systems and other fire prevention devices. These specialists play a critical role in fire protection mechanics by ensuring systems remain functional and compliant with safety standards.
They work in a wide range of buildings, including:
- Commercial and industrial buildings
- Multi-unit residential buildings
- Hospitals, schools, and public institutions
- Data centers and critical infrastructure
Key qualities for this trade include precision, attention to detail, good physical condition, and a strong sense of responsibility.
Training: A Specialized and Recognized DEP
To work in this field, you must complete a DSV (Diploma of Vocational Studies) in Fire Protection Mechanics, offered notably at École Polytechnique de Laval. This approximately 900-hour program prepares students for all aspects of the trade, including:
- Reading plans and specifications
- Assembly and installation of water-based, air, preaction, and chemical fire protection systems, as well as piping networks
- System inspection and testing
- Use of specialized tools
- Health and safety
If you have not completed your high school diploma or its equivalent, you can consult the full list of prerequisite options here related to the fire protection DSV.
Once graduated, students must obtain a competency certificate issued by the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ) to work on construction sites.
Excellent Job Prospects
The fire protection sector is growing rapidly due to the constant development of commercial, industrial, and residential infrastructure.
According to CCQ data, hiring prospects for fire protection mechanics remain among the strongest in specialized construction. New graduates often find employment quickly after completing their training, and several companies, such as Gicleurs Acme, even offer internships.
In terms of compensation, salaries in fire protection mechanics are highly competitive. According to May 2025 collective agreements, hourly wages range from $22.68 to $48.45, along with several benefits.
